I recently read a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association on intermittent fasting. The results were not all that surprising to me but instead helped to confirm the methods we use with our weight loss clients. The study found that intermittent fasting (they used a specific window of eating between 7am and 3pm) could help people not only lose weight but also treat their high blood pressure. Using intermittent fasting in our Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky weight loss offices has produced similar results for our clients for years. We regularly see clients who not only lose weight by following our methods but also reduce joint pain, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.
There are a couple of important reasons to point out as to why intermittent fasting works so well for weight loss. The first (and most important reason in my opinion) is that intermittent fasting helps to control insulin levels. If you do not eat for an extended period of time your insulin levels will decrease making it must easier and more natural for your body to start using body fat for energy (fat burning). Secondly, intermittent fasting can actually make you feel less hungry. I know this might sound counterintuitive. How can not eating make you feel LESS hungry? The truth is that eating is actually what stimulates hunger. While it can take some people a while to adapt to this new way of eating almost all of our clients who fastreport a significant decrease in hunger. The less hungry you are, the more likely you are to maintain whatever diet you are trying to stick to.
